How porn continues to innovate online

downloadThe porn business is known to have been a pioneer in online marketing given that it had few other channels through which to sell its products. And even though the sophistication of digital marketing has become more democratised, the porn industry continues to surprise.

A recent example of digital marketing innovation coming out of the porn business is from Marc Dorcel in France. This undisputed king of porn in Europe was challenged to monetise his catalogue of films. Too much content was simply accessible for free. As such, he allowed unlimited access to his films to all that could keep their hands on the keyboard. Yes, essentially he created the biggest digital tease of all time.

By creating so much pent-up desire, he forced people to pay for his subscription service. This was the ultimate deprivation strategy. Much like the Milk Board did decades ago by depriving people of mild to dip their cookies in order to create longer for milk, Marc deprived people of their hands to… well, you know. With industries such as film and music where content is being freely shared, looking at deprivation strategies could be a very interesting approach to work with the tide of change, versus trying to fight it.
